The Little Book of Hygge:

Danish Secrets to Happy Living

by Meik Wiking

#UM0672

Hardcover, 240 pages; 2017

$19.99

Hygge has been called everything from “the art of creating

intimacy,” “coziness of the soul” and “the absence of

annoyance” to “taking pleasure from the presence of

soothing things,” “cozy togetherness” and, my personal

favorite, “cocoa by candlelight.”

Denmark consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the

world, and many attribute this largely to the concept of

hygge

.

Pronounced “hoo-ga” or “hue-guh,” hygge is an atmosphere and a

feeling involving comfort, well-being, and cozy warmth. In this breezy

and charming guide to this delightful Danish philosophy, Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness

Research Institute in Copenhagen, introduces the components of this key element of Danish

culture—candles (lots of them!), fireplaces, intimate home-cooked meals, atmospheric lighting,

warm drinks, cake, etc. He also explains the history and science behind the concept, and provides

tips (and recipes!) for incorporating a little hygge into your own life. As we suspected,

“taking a

break with a good book is a cornerstone in the concept of hygge.”

Yes, please!

The Ghost Army of World War II : How One Top-Secret

Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound

Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery

by Rick Beyer and Elizabeth Sayles

#UK1142

Hardcover, 253 pages; 2015

$40.00

In January 1944, Allied forces launched one of the most ambitious

deceptions of World War II: the Twenty-Third Headquarters Special

Troops, aka “the Ghost Army.” Four units of engineers, radio

operators, soldiers, and artists (including fashion designer Bill

Blass, wildlife artist Arthur Singer, and painter/sculptor Ellsworth

Kelly) were tasked with creating fake Army divisions

“to confuse

and confound the enemy.”

After the D-Day invasion, the Ghost

Army maneuvered inflatable tanks, Jeeps, and artillery across France; impersonated Allied radio

transmissions; and used sonic deception to simulate the sounds of troop movement, all within

mere miles of enemy lines. The project was so top secret that few in the U.S. Army even knew it

existed, and it wasn’t fully declassified until the 1990s. Now you can finally read the Ghost Army’s

incredible story, illustrated with photographs, maps, and sketches and paintings created by the

artists themselves as they crossed Europe. Truly amazing!
