The Little Flowers of Saint Francis

by Brother Ugolino and edited by Jon M. Sweeney

#UM1272

Paperback, 177 pages; 2016 (2011) $

10.99

What makes these stories relevant today is the power with which

they grab hold of the reader, sometimes by the fantastic claims they

make for the life of St. Francis and his first followers, to change one’s

life before God.

—from the introduction

For nearly seven centuries, Christians have looked to the writings

of St. Francis of Assisi for guidance in their faith journeys. Among

the most popular and enduring of that holy man’s work is

The

Little Flowers of Saint Francis

, a fourteenth-century collection

of tales about the early days and followers of the Franciscan

movement. This contemporary edition of the iconic volume is

composed of fifty-three brief chapters, presented in straightforward, “earthly” language: Some are

mini-hagiographies of Francis’s brethren, others parable-like accounts of conversions, struggles

with temptation, and lessons in humility. Whether you absorb this slender volume in a single

sitting or read a story a day as part of your personal devotional, you’ll be moved by its

“human

portrait of the most lovable and intriguing of all the saints.”

One-Pot Pasta

by Sabrina Fauda-Rôle with photography by Akiko Ida

#UM1472

Hardcover, 70 pages; 2016

$11.99

I’m always on the lookout for time-saving shortcuts in the

kitchen, so this little cookbook—with mouthwatering photos

of colorful pasta dishes and the subtitle “From Pot to Plate in

Under 30 Minutes”—caught my eye. Soon enough my family

was happily munching on a beautiful, fresh tomato and basil

linguine, which, as promised, I’d thrown together in less than

half an hour. The best part was there was only one pot to wash

after the cooking was done! Next I employed some leftovers to

make a creamy chicken and mushroom farfalle (delicious) and

we’ll soon be trying carrots, curry, and sesame on whole-wheat spaghetti. The concept is simple:

All the ingredients go in the pot, and everything simmers in a small amount of water while the

pasta cooks. The noodles absorb a lot of the flavor and the starches released by the pasta make the

sauce richer. It’s a win-win! Armed with these thirty different recipes for meat-, fish-, veggie-, and

cheese-based dishes, even the most harried cook will impress and delight diners, be they family

members or dinner-party guests!
